Coronavirus (COVID-19) – information for local communities

We are working hard with charities and groups to make sure local needs are met during this time. Please find a list of funded projects here. Life under lockdown can cause extreme stress and anxiety and may lead to some people drinking more than they are used to or other addictive behaviours. People are struggling to cope and often when that happens, they turn to things like alcohol and drugs or addictive behaviours, such as gambling or gaming. If left unchecked these behaviours can become harmful and have the potential to destroy lives.

We also want to be a hub for all drug, alcohol and addictive behaviour information in Cumbria.

Welcome to Cumbria Amphibian and Reptile Group! (CARG). PLEASE READ OUR LATEST ADVICE CONCERNING THE COVID VIRUS OUTBREAK.

Although this has been a difficult time for us, we have been so grateful for all your heart-warming support. You have been our eyes and ears on the ground, helped us with surveying, kept us entertained in sharing your unusual and spectacular wildlife sightings and been our most important financial backers. We cannot thank you enough for staying with us and continuing your support. More than ever, you are needed now as we begin the process of recovery.

We are still adapting to the changing situation and are welcoming back furloughed staff and of course our valued volunteers. Catching up on nature reserve management jobs and time lost from the survey season are priorities, as is making sure you can visit our nature reserves safely. There are still a few weeks left for you to visit the ospreys at Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve — after the end of August these beautiful birds will be leaving for their winter home.

We thank our dedicated osprey volunteers who are back to welcome you and answer your questions. If you visit any of our nature reserves, and you find the parking areas full, please just come back another time. Like most organisations we are facing financial challenges and our recovery will take some time. The Wildlife Trusts are calling for the Government to put nature at the heart of our economic recovery — a green recovery. Given the chance, nature is capable of making an extraordinary recovery.

Now is the opportunity to do more than just fighting for what we can salvage, but to put nature back into active recovery and start to bring wildlife back.
